Celebrities STAND OUT in their PEARLS

Everyone thinks that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and there has been little to dissuade
this belief until now. Pearls are usually hailed for their vintage beauty and have been seen
as an antique type jewelry in the past. Mothers have passed these heirlooms of white beauty
down to daughters and granddaughters. Mostly strings of small, medium, and large sizes they
were pretty much a staple in traditional heirlooms passed down maternal lines.

Celebrities of the bygone era like Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, and Liz Tyler were always
dripping with a string of pearls. The opulent jewelry conveyed a sense of maturity and
class not seen in all Hollywood stars of today. However, pearls are making a strong comeback
due to the class and grace of Princess Di on an international level. She could be seen wearing
a string quite often with her beautiful designer gowns. Her choice in pearls catapulted these
gems from ancient to modern times.

Modern day stars like Kiera Knightley and Sarah Jessica Parker have done much to revive our
fascination with pearls. Kiera has been spotted wearing non-traditional pearls such as black
pearls while out on the town. Her classic good looks along with this classic jewelry holds all
the glitz and glamor of early Hollywood beauties. Sarah Jessica Parker has charmed many fans
with her adorable persona. But, she will probably always be remembered fondly for her big,
beautiful pearl necklace she wore on a Gap commercial in recent years. Models like Kate Moss
are very fashion forward, and have elevated the status of long strings of them. She is well
known for wearing some with many outfits. Mollusks that make these round beauties aren’t pretty
themselves. But, oh how those celebs shine when they flash their pearly whites while wearing
a string or pearly whites around their graceful necks!

PearlGenie Answers…

Hey Pearl Genie, I would like to know why pearls are so expensive?

PearlGenie Says: Pearls are a gift of Mother Nature to us. Even before diamonds, pearls ere known and not only known but even used and worn. They have charmed the tribal, and they even charm the elegant modernists of today. They don’t bling like diamonds or gold and silver but they still appear clean and chic. Today, both natural and cultured pearls exist. However, one usually find pearls expensive. Not that there are not inexpensive pearls, as fake, lusterless pearls are often cheap. But if one intrigues him/herself over the question that why usually pearls are expensive, here are few things to recommend-

  • When we compare natural and cultured pearls, often natural ones are expensive, that is so because of the very fact that after searching thousand oysters, there is one that contains a perfectly shaped pearl.

  • Natural saltwater pearls have almost ceased to exist making them very precious.

  • White pearls usually have undertone shades which make them more expensive. Tones of pink or rose color are far expensive then creamier overtones. Even silver overtones are also highly priced.

  • Even the shape of the pearl makes an impact on the value of the pearl. Those shaped with perfection are indeed costlier and the shape-large round sphere-is the highest paid for shape in pearls.

  • The stringing of pearls require a long process and tradesmen that can do work with perfection as one single flaw can lead to a wasted pearl. This makes pearl business an expensive business and thus in lieu o profits, pearls too are sold on higher bids.

  • Pearls are associated with royalty and so the price!

  • Other basis in whose accordance pearls are classified as expensive or not are- The more lustrous the pearl, the more price will it fetch.

  • The pearl with zero blemishes on surface will fetch a higher price as compared to one which has even a single bump or mark.

  • No pearl is perfectly symmetrical but one which is close to it gets a higher value.

  • Larger the size, more the value it will get.

After she woke up, a woman told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s day. What do you think it means?”

You’ll know tonight.” he said.

To the woman’s delight, that evening her husband came home with an attractive looking package. In glee she opened it only to find a book entitled, “The meaning of dreams.”

A Woman of Substance: Alina Jidkova

Life sure hasn’t been a bed of roses for Tennis Star Alina Jidkova. She was plagued by struggles every step of the way. She was born in Russia, then known as the Soviet Union. It dawned on her that given the situation of her country at that time, little was going to become of her tennis career. And so she moved to the US. Her move there was no less easy. She practiced during the day and at night gave tennis lessons.

Alina Jidkova

She faced hard times in America as well, such was her struggles that she spent many a night at storage shed and train stations, because she had nowhere else to go. With little money, she was reduced to eating noodles and pasta. There were many times she wanted to just shrug off everything in despair. But motivation and the sheer will power kept her going, and she created a niche for herself in her professional career, the high point being her triumphant win over Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams in 2004.

Her conviction, self belief and perseverance have held her in good stead and she is now Co-founder and Creative Director of BeMyPearl.com. In partnership with Owner Sascha Ghods, Bemypearl.com offers to people reputable, quality service and an affordabiltity that takes pearls to the common man.

Being successful today has in not made Alina her roots. This is reflected in her Be My Lucky Pearl campaign, through which a specially designed pearl chain by Jidkova is sold to source the money to an international children’s foundation.

Alina Jidkova, tennis professional, co-founder of Bemypearl.com, but above all, truly a Woman of Substance.

Typhoons Affect Pearl Harvesting in China

China is known for it’s typhoons. Situated near the sea, the sea surface moves upward, mainly because of atmospheric pressure is much lower than that of the exterior. Typhoons are also associated with strong winds, these winds also drag and take the water up to the coast.

Because of the combined efforts of pressure and wind there is a rise in the sea water. This rise in sea water causes flooding.

In china, “ZHEJIANG is one of the cities most at risk for typhoons. In this coastal province south of Shanghai live 50 million Chinese. It is one of the country’s three centers of industry, yet its urban areas, including the colonial treaty-ports of Ningbo and Wenzhou, are regularly pummeled by seasonal storms”, Reports Bill Marcus of The Independent

How do these typhoons affect pearl harvesting?

Basically pearl oysters are extremely sensitive. They are susceptible to any change in the environment. The high pressure winds of the typhoon can kill the oysters and also destroy entire pearl farms.

Au Natural – Natural Pearls

Pearls are nature’s gift to mankind. They are formed inside mussels, oysters and clams. When a parasite or irritant enters into the shell of the mollusks, it gets trapped there. And so when a foreign particle enters inside the shell, the mollusk as a defense mechanism, isolates this object by secreting what is known as nacre.

As the years, many layers of nacre are formed around this foreign object and thus a beautiful pearl is created. Also to be noted is that the shape of the foreign object trapped inside the shell is responsible for the shape of the pearl, the rounder the foreign object, the rounder the pearl turns out to be. The mollusk that incubates the pearl determines the color of the pearl.

Natural pearls are unbelievably expensive, due to its rarity. Since centuries, natural pearls are coveted by women of every social sphere. Of course due to its high price, it could be afforded by royalty and rich people only. However, we know have cultured pearls which are relatively inexpensive as compared to natural pearls and so we see a growing trend of more women wearing pearls.
