Quality of pearls is determined by various factors .Internationally there are no such fixed norms which grade pearls, but almost all dealers use the same alphabetical nomenclature A, A+, AA, AA+, and AAA for grading. Under this grading system AAA is the highest quality of pearl available. There are six factors which define the quality, price and beauty of pearls. They are nacre, luster, surface, shape, color and size.

The first step to define the quality is, to identify the type of pearl. As there are only three major type of pearls which are used in jewelry, they are; Freshwater, Saltwater Akoya and south-sea & Tahitian. All these are formed under different geographical and climatic condition by different breed of oysters.

Next, is the pearl Nacre, which is a secretion of an oyster which protects the mollusk from the irritants. It is a shimmering substance that lines the interior surface of the oyster shells, also called as mother-of-pearl. And the quality of pearls depends on the layer of Nacre. Thicker the layer of nacre, higher the quality of pearl.

Luster is an arrangement of surface radiance and a deep shine. Quality of pearl is good only when the luster is intense and bright. You can check this by seeing your reflection on the surface of pearl. If you are able to see your mirror image clearly on the surface of a pearl, it means the pearl is of good quality. If the look of pearl is too white, dull or dry then it is of low quality.

Another important factor is the surface of a pearl. If the surface of pearl is plain and clean, that is without any spot or roughness; they are called as highest quality pearl.

The rounder the pearl, the more precious and expensive it is. And to get an absolutely round pearl is extremely uncommon. Baroque pearls cost less than round pearls, as they are asymmetrical in shape, but they are radiant and attractive.

Color is one more aspect which defines the quality of pearl. Pearls come in a variety of colors and shades in between white to black. And it is vital and difficult to differentiate between color and overtone. There are varied varieties of some naturally occurring colors such as; white, aqua, golden, champagne, green, and black. And Within every color group, there are a number of recurrent overtones and variations in the surface. Choice of selecting your favorite overtone is a matter of taste.

Lastly the quality of pearls can be judge by its size. This can be done by measuring the diameters of pearls in millimeters. Largest size of 20 mm South Sea pearls has been found and the smallest size is the size of tiny seed pearls; which is smaller than 1 mm. Pearl appearance and value can be increase by only a difference of 1mm in the pearl size.
