Eco Friendly Pearls

As you may be aware, there are various different gems such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds and not forgetting the good ole diamonds. But did you know that compared to all the possible gems available pearls are by far the most eco-friendly gem. Why, you may ask? Because pearls don’t require mining that is used to unearth other gems. This mining is destructive. Pearls don’t require any chemical leaching. Most importantly pearls are found in mollusks which are used to culture pearls and these mollusks depend on a relatively stable environment and clear water, in order to develop.

What You Need To Know About An Appraisal

Pretty much any insurance that you take for your pearl jewelry, will need to be apparised. Here’s what you need to know about an appraisal:

  • When your pearls are appraised, make sure you have a report that contains the features of your all your jewelry.
  • Appraise all your jewelry separately, and do not do it all together.
  • Have your jewelry appraised on a regular basis, since the value fluctuates and most often it will go up.
  • Also remember that an appraisal of the jewelry and a lab’s certification are two completely different things. A certification will never change, but an appraisal will change due to changes in the market.
  • Check with your insurance company, where you can get the appraisal done. Most companies will have their own list of appraisers, so prior to doing an appraisal make sure you do it with the companies specified by the insurance company.

Part II: Important Questions to Ask While Taking An Insurance For Your Jewelry

Now that you’ve decided to get your pearl jewelry insured, here are a few important things you need to ask the company your insuring with.

  • How much of my jewelry value, will the policy cover? Is it just a fraction of the value, or the entire 100 %?
  • Will the insurance cover theft and loss? What if my pearls get damaged?
  • How will you replace my jewelry? Do I have to go to a specific jeweler?
  • Is it mandatory to do an appraisal?
  • Do I need to go to specific people to do an appraisal, or can I do it through anyone?
  • Is there any amount that is deductible?
  • Are there any specific repair policies. Do I have to go to a certain jeweler?

Basically, the best thing to do is, do your homework. Make a list of questions and then proceed with dealing with an insurance. You need to know all the details of the insurance policy, before you proceed with one. It’s not like your taking a life or home insurance. Those are common and we pretty much know the details. So spend some time and do a little research. It will go a long way in helping you.
